This is the third different subspecies of gopher snake I've found this year. This one was under a stump, where it was damp. The snake looked like it was going to shed in the next day or so.

These snakes can get very large, in some cases up to 7 feet. They have pointed heads and strong neck muscles to enable them to burrow in search of their favorite prey - pocket gophers.

A male Southern Alligator Lizard (Elgaria multicarinata). Males can usually be distinguished from females by their broad, triangular heads.
