At the beginning of May I travelled with the Independence Biology Society to central Ohio. This Black Rat Snake (Elaphe obsoleta) was the only snake found on the trip.

Salamander Sanctuary
This was a very good area for salamanders.
Two-lined Salamander The New Number Two
The Two-lined Salamander (Eurycea bislineata) can often be found under rocks near creeks.

Millipedes Thousand Leggers
Since it was so damp, millipedes were out and about.
Redback I Saw Red
A well-marked Redback Salamander (Plethodon cinereus).
Hocking River Canoe Trip
On the scenic Hocking River.
Soft Shell Turtle Pointy-nosed Pancake Turtle
We saw several adults basking on the banks, but the highlight of the canoe trip was when one of the students found this young Spiny Soft-shell Turtle (Apalone spinifera).

Crayfish Dance Crawdad Celebration
The students celebrated finding the turtle by doing the "Crayfish Dance."
Green Frog It's Not Easy Being Green
This Green Frog (Rana clamitans) was caught near a creek.
Red Salamander Welcome Sight
I hadn't seen a Red Salamander (Pseudotriton ruber) in over 20 years, this old adult was an exciting find.
