We continued to herp the creek in Horn Hollow and made some excellent finds before returning to the lodge for dinner and then going on a night hike.

The Bess Beetle is a black and shiny wood-eating insect that exhibits family care - adults prepare decaying wood for their larvae by chewing it.

The Longtail Salamander has a tail that accounts for more than half of its total length.

A number of students began finding salamanders.
Doubletime Doubletime
A young Red Salamander with a Southern Two-lined Salamander.
Slimy Salamander Lungless
Although they live entirely land, Slimy Salamanders have no lungs. Instead, they breathe through their skin. In order to breathe, they must stay moist.
Eft Complicated Creature
The Red Eft is an immature phase of the Red-spotted newt. The usual life cycle of this species includes three distinct post-hatching stages: aquatic larva, terrestrial (juvenile) eft, and aquatic adult.
Worm Snake Secretive Snake
This Midwest Worm Snake (the first of three that were found) was under a log in the creek's floodplain.
