Thursday - Herping with Lenny (San Francisco Area)
After visiting Berkeley, a short amount of time was spent herping the Greater San Francisco area.
Although they derive their common name from basking on fenceposts, these lizards often seek the warmth of rocks heated by the sun.
Land snails, some of them quite large, can sometimes be seen wandering about in damp conditions.
We found five Coast Garter Snakes in about an hour. Most of them had a red and black checkered pattern.
Here is a photo of the habitat where we were finding Coast Garter Snakes.

Lenny's kids caught this virtually "ringless" Pacific Ringneck Snake a few days before my arrival.
