Back in 1775, Spaniards discovered gold in the area that is now Eldorado Canyon. A hundred years later the prospectors and miners of the day took over and established the notorious Techatticup Mine. Despite the sinister reputation of the mine, it produced several million dollars in gold, silver, copper and lead.

Eldorado Canyon
Nelson Nelson
The only town in the valley is Nelson - its residents drink Coke.
Sideblotched Lizard
Early Riser
The Sideblotched Lizard is usually the first reptile species seen in the morning. Its small size allows it to warm up quickly.
Longnose Snake Rhino Rerun
I found a second Longnose Snake in Nelson. This one was more lightly colored and had more speckles than the first.
Mead Road Trip
The street that runs through Eldorado Canyon leads to Lake Mead.
Striped Striped Side
Some populations of Sideblotched Lizards contain striped individuals.

Gecko Gecko Crossing
This Desert Banded Gecko was seen crossing the road after dark.
Night Snake Night Snake
Seldom encountered during the day, this nocturnal snake is occasionally seen crossing roads at night. The Night Snake preys upon lizards, snakes, frogs, and small mice, which it subdues with its mild venom; this venom poses no threat to humans.
