Mojave National Preserve (in California) is vast. At 1.6 million acres, it is the third largest unit of the National Park System in the contiguous United States.

The omnious sky behind this Joshua Tree was an indication of things to come - a two hour rainstorm.
Scorpion Sting
This scorpion was the only one that I found on the trip.
Spiny Lizard Gimme Shelter
A Spiny Lizard took cover underneath a board to hide out from the impending storm.
Odd Bug Odd Bug
This was one crazy-looking beetle.
Desert Tortoise After the Storm
Once the rain ended, I knew it would be a good time to look for tortoises, which often come out of their burrows to drink water following a storm. I was not disappointed.
