Nature Conservancy
During last year's trip to Las Vegas, I learned of a type of toad that occurs only in Oasis Valley, NV along a 10-mile stretch of the Amargosa River. I decided that in 2011, my quest would be to find an Amargosa Toad (Anaxyrus nelsoni). It's a long drive to the location where the toads are known to be found - about three hours from Boulder City. The Nature Conservancy has purchased some of the land to protect the toad, which failed to make it on the Endangered Species list.
| Desert Pool Pools like this harbor Speckled Dace, but I did not see or hear any signs of toads (elsewhere I saw Red-spotted Toad eggs and tadpoles). There were a number of crayfish in the pools and I wondered if they were non-native and affecting the toad population.
